Venlafaxine hydrochloride, generic name for the anti-depressant Effexor®. Effexor® is indicated for major depressive disorder. Effexor® is currently indicated for generalized anxiety disorders as some of the other anti-depressants are. Effexor® is sometimes used for chronic fatigue syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder. Caution should be used, as Effexor® has been shown to increase the blood pressure for a sustained period of time. Effexor® can sometimes cause a severe skin rash called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

Effexor® is classified pharmacologically as an inhibitor of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Discontinued use, especially when abrupt, may result in spontaneous side effects including agitation, anorexia, anxiety, confusion, tremor, and dizziness. Side effects may also include headaches, somnolence, impotence, insomnia, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, and decreased libido (sexual drive).
